barsBars are a type of cookie consisting of batter or other ingredients that are poured or pressed into a pan (sometimes in multiple layers), and cut into cookie-sized pieces after baking. Brownies are an example of a batter-type bar, while Rice Krispie treats are a bar that doesn't require baking. Canadians generally refer to bars as "squares" and in British English, bars are known as "tray bakes".

breadsBreads or quick/sweet breads are good any time of day. Most Dutch refer to these classic American dessert breads as cake because they are sweet like cake. As Americans, we still stick to our guns and refer to these items as bread and not cake. Mostly, I think this is because of the type of pan we bake them in (a bread pan) and these sweet breads are denser than most light and airy American-style cakes. Banana bread is the most common example of a dessert bread and is a staple in most American homes. Banana bread brightens up any meal.

cakeCake - Who doesn't know what cake is? But in case you don't, it is a sweet, bread-like (but has a different texture than traditional breads) treat that comes in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. There are special occasion cakes - like birthday cake or wedding cake, and cake for everyday - like coffeecake, typically flavored with cinnamon, sugar, and nuts, which is intended to be served with a hot cup of coffee.

cookieCookie - In the United States and Canada, a cookie is a small, flat-baked treat, usually containing butter, flour, eggs and sugar. In most English-speaking countries outside North America, the most common word for this is "biscuit". These individually sized treats come in a wide range of types and flavors. The most famous classic American Cookie is the classic chocolate chip cookie, which is composed of a vanilla flavored dough imbedded with chocolate chips or chunks, and is best served with a cold glass of milk.

cupcakeCupcake - A cupcake is an American-style small hand-held cake baked in a paper liner or cup-shaped pan. Cupcakes look similar in size to a muffin, but are very different in taste. The cake is softer and lighter in texture, generally much sweeter and served as a dessert. A cupcake is a special sweet treat that comes in many different flavors and colors. Most of my cupcakes are topped with a generous amount of frosting and decorated with sprinkles, fruits, nuts, chocolates, flowers or anything you desire!

MuffinsMuffin - A muffin is an American English name for a type of bread that is baked in small portions. Many forms are somewhat like small cakes or cupcakes in shape, although they usually are not as sweet as cupcakes and generally lack frosting. There are many varieties and flavors of these treats, which often include fruit and/or nuts.

pastriesPastries can be various types of sweet baked goods - some are flaky, puffy, donut-like, crispy, or a similar texture to shortbread. For me the pastry items are individual serving sized deluctable treats that do not fall under the other categories. Great for high teas, breakfast & brunch events, and office parties. A commonly known example is a cinnamon roll, which is a sweet yeast dough rolled over a sugar/butter mixture, cut into individual portions and iced. A delicious, sugary, buttery sweet treat.

piePie - An American-style pie is a baked dish which is usually made with a pastry dough casing that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. Pies can be either "filled", where a dish is covered by pastry and the filling is placed on top of that or the filling is completely enclosed in the pastry shell.

Whoopie Pies

Whoopie PiesWhoopie Pies - also known as: gobs, scooter pies, chocolate drops, round dogs, cream cakes, moon pies, or black moons. For the sake of simplicity, I will refer to these sweet delicious treats as Whoopie Pies. This is a familiar treat in the Northeastern part of the United States - originally composed of creamy marshmallow icing sandwiched in between two personal-sized round chocolate cakes. Whoopie Pies now come in a wide variety of flavors, but are still marked by two characteristics: their soft, rounded outer cakes and a generous amount of inner creamy filling.
